Biographical Sketch - Yuri Quintana, Ph.D.

Dr. Yuri Quintana is the Director for Education and Informatics the International Outreach Program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. St. Jude is a leading treatment and research centre for children with catastrophic diseases and was founded by entertainment legend Danny Thomas. St. Jude provides care for children with catastrophic illnesses such as cancer and AIDS, regardless of the patient family's ability to pay.

At St. Jude, Dr. Quintana is the director for several international ehealth and elearning projects. Cure4Kids is a web-based learning and collaboration network used in 151 countries by thousands of health professionals. Cure4Kids is the world's largest online pediatric cancer education site providing online seminars and live conferences. Pond4Kids is a web-based multi-lingual medical record system for collaborative cancer research. POND4Kids is being used in over 20 countries for the development of international pediatric cancer protocols. Prior to coming to St. Jude, Dr. Quintana was a Principal Investigator in the Canadian HEALNet Research Network (1995- 2002) and developed several projects in e-health, e-learning, and medical informatics. He also designed and deployed two decision support systems for breast cancer patients used by the Canadian Cancer Society. (More on research projects). He was also a member of the HEALNet Education group, and participated in the development of a national graduate level health informatics curriculum.

Dr. Quintana was also a faculty member in the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Western Ontario and Director of the New Media Research Lab (1995-2002). Dr. Quitnana obtained over $500,000 of research funding for a large inter- disciplinary team from various research councils including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Dr. Quintana supervised graduate students working on research topics in interactive media, informatics, and consumer health.

Dr. Quintana has previously worked for IBM Canada Limited in several research, development, and high-tech manufacturing positions. Dr. Quintana has also worked for Watcom Inc., WATFAC, and the University of Waterloo's Computer Systems Group where many of the early computer programming languages were developed by Wes Graham and other Waterloo software pioneers.

Dr. Quintana has been the chair of several international conferences on interactive media including the Techsposium Conference on Global Health and Education (2004), the Interactive Consumer Health Conference (1999), the Canadian Digital Libraries conference (2001), and the Information and Media conference (1998).

Dr. Yuri Quintana has a Ph.D. and Masters degree in Systems Design Engineering, and an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science both from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada (see ranking).

Dr. Quintana's current focus is on research and development of innovative Internet technologies that empower communities of health care professionals and consumers to communicate, learn and collaborate on a worldwide basis. (More on current projects and research).
