Dr. Yuri Quintana to give invited talk at Harvard Medical School (July 2007)

Dr. Quintana will give a talk at the to the Harvard Medical School on July 27, 2007. He will present his work to the medical informatics community and Harvard and MIT, and Beth Isreal Deaconess Hospital. The talk is sponsored and will be held at the Countway Medical Library on Thursday July 26, 2007. The talk is titled: Cure4Kids – A Global Online Education and Collaboration Network for Pediatric Oncology

Cure4Kids wins St. Jude Clinical Improvement Award (June 2007)

Award is given annually for cinical improvement at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Over 1,000 users at St. Jude use Cure4Kids for education and collaboration, both internally and internationally.

Dr. Yuri Quintana appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Health Information Science, University of Victoria. (June 2007)
Dr. Yuri Quintana has been collaborating with faculty and students at the University of Victoria for several years. In June 2007, he was appointed adjunct associate professor. In this role, Dr. Quintana participates in program development and curriculum design, provides mentoring to students at both the undergraduate and graduate level, assist the school in scholarly publications, and supports development of linkages with external organizations.
Oncopedia launched on Cure4Kids - inspired by Wikipedia (June 2007)
Oncopedia is a freely accessible interactive educational resource on Cure4Kids.org designed for pediatric hematologists/oncologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals who provide care to children with cancer worldwide. Oncopedia's content is compiled using online submissions from Cure4Kids users. The content includes complex hematology/oncology cases and images with specific questions about patient management, controversial topics, and interesting presenting features, including illustrations of patient's clinical characteristics and imaging and pathology findings. An international editorial board reviews all the contributions. The cases that are chosen are posted on Oncopedia with expert commentary from our editorial board, and then opened for online moderated discussion. Registered Cure4Kids users can interact online with other users and the editorial board by posting opinions and questions about the content. You can also find peer-reviewed, disease-specific information that is practical and up to date. All material can be freely used and downloaded for reference and educational purposes.

Cure4Kids Hosts Denge Fever Online Event (May 2007)
Dengue is a mosquito-borne, viral disease that affects people primarily living in tropical countries. Cure4Kids hosted a live event on May 18, 2007 to bring world experts online to discuss important facts regarding diagnosis and management of dengue in children. Over 60 particpants from 10 countries took part in this global event.
Cure4Kids surpases 1 million items downloaded and over 10,000 users in 155 (April 2007)
Cure4Kids was launched in 2002 with 5 seminars and 35 users. Since then, by word-of-mouth recommendations, Cure4Kids has grown to over 10,000 users around the world. Cure4Kids is used for online medical education and online collaborations supporting teaching, and international program development. See a map of our users. Dr. Quintana presented his current research work at the Information Technology and Communications in Health (ITCH) Conference. (See conference web site
TODAY’S INFORMATION FOR TOMORROW’S IMPROVEMENTS is the working theme for the 2007 International Conference being held in Victoria, Canada. Information technology has affected nearly every aspect of health care today. ) It is hosted by the Health Information Science School at the University of Victoria. The need for better information and systems to provide improved services and improve patient quality of life has been recognized as being a critical issue both nationally and internationally. However, problems related to the use, usability and usefulness of many healthcare systems continue to hinder and limit the potential of information technology in health care. Other unresolved issues include the need for standardization and integration of systems into effective and safe healthcare practices, both within healthcare organizations and in the community. This conference will focus on understanding how health informatics can be applied towards quality improvement of health and healthcare organizational outcomes. To this end, ITCH 2007 will promote an international and interdisciplinary gathering of leading practitioners and researchers from Canada and internationally to support today’s information systems and ensure tomorrow’s improvements.

Dr. Quintana presented at Cancer on the Internet Conference (July 10, 2006)
Dr. Yuri Quintana was an invited speaker at the 3rd International Conference Cancer on the Internet Conference held in Washington DC, in conjunction with the UICC World Congress. The conference brought together innovators in e-health to discuss innovations in e-health, and to develop of joint efforts among innovators interested in using the Internet to deal with inequitable access to services, information overload, inefficient research, inappropriate practice patterns and the limited availability of resources for the management of cancer, worldwide.

Cure4Kids signs a three year formal collaboration agreement between the Cure4Kids program and the Society for Pediatric Oncology (SIOP).
